The idea for hubbub.net literally woke me out of a dream four years ago.
It was the idea that as artists and art lovers we needed to create a virtual space where we could find out what was going on and have frank discussions about what inspires us and inflames us; a place where we could speak plainly and directly and cut out the “middle man;” a place where artists can speak directly to curators; a place where the audience is on par with the critics; a place where government and other funders can eavesdrop and ask questions in order to discover what is truly important about the arts in their community.
This might sound like a tall order for a website but as we’ve seen with sites such as craigslist, YouTube and Facebook, a website can be a powerful tool if a critical mass of users choose to engage.
It took several years of research and development to get hubbub.net as far as it is today and we still have a look way to but after meeting with Sadira Rodrigues and later Heidi Reitmaier, it seemed that the gallery and in particular WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution, was the right place to test the metal of the site while providing an important component of the exhibition at the same time.
In 2009, following the beta release in partnership with the Vancouver Art Gallery and the WACK! exhibition, hubbub.net will go into full release. The full version will serve all genres and anyone with an arts event or something passionate to say about the arts will have full access to what will be a completely user generated site.
We welcome your feedback and we invite you to join us in developing the site during this important beta phase by attending a WACK! event and then adding your voice to the glorious hullabaloo that is hubbub.net!
Sincerely,
