ORLAN (www.orlan.net) is one of the most prominent body performance artists worldwide. Born in Saint-Etienne, France, she has been active in photography, sculpture, installation, and performance art since 1965. She became famous by performing a series of aesthetic surgeries as artwork on her own body in the 1990s, and thus invented “carnal art.” Through radical performance broadcast in institutions throughout the world, Orlan asks questions about the status of the body in society.

The program surveys the 19 “Chainletter Tapes” compiled by Miranda July, between 1996 and 2007, for her Joanie4Jackie project. As a DIY Distributor Joanie4Jackie played a seminal role in encouraging women to make films and share their stories, attesting to the force of Riot Grrrl era cultural production and dissemination.

The course will culminate in a collaborative event celebrating local women’s contributions to the feminist revolution.

This two evening event celebrates early feminist video practice by artists working in Vancouver in the 70s and 80s. It includes Sara Diamond's seminal work with memory and documentary-based narrative, Elizabeth Vander Zaag's playful exploration with technology, a program of experimental, performative and documentary-based shorts as well as video by individuals and collectives mobilized for change.
