The Vancouver Art Gallery join Hubbub.net in broadening the discussion of contemporary art into a new online collaborative environment.
WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution features the innovative and risk-taking work that emerged from the convergence of art and feminist thought in the late 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition brings together the work of more than 120 artists from 21 countries, and presents the most influential practitioners of feminist art as well as important figures from around the world who revealed contemporary art's potential as a tool of political activism.
Born from a desire to engage a new generation of tech-savvy creators, producers and audiences, Hubbub.net proposes to democratize the critical discussion of art. It is a place that breaks down the barriers between spectators, artists and arts organizations. By connecting resourceful participants in a nation longing for creative discussion, Hubbub.net provides a way to overcome our chronic politeness and our geographic hindrances.
In concrete terms Hubbub.net is a website that uses blogging and chat room technology along with user-generated content tools (that you may be familiar with from sites such as YouTube, Flickr or Facebook) to create a dynamic portal site that is entirely user driven.
There are four ways to engage with WACK through Hubbub.net:
- As a producer or curator you can add an event, upload images or video along with pertinent information including descriptions, dates, times and links to your site.
- As a columnist (self-appointed or engaged by a producer/curator) you can write a thought-provoking editorial about an event, a related topic or any other topic generally related to the arts.
- You can start or join a discussion relating to any event or column on the site. Anyone with an email address and an opinion can create a pen name and have their say.
- You can visit Hubbub.net and find out what's happening and what people are saying about arts and culture in your town.
For our Beta release, Hubbub.net will be partnering with the Vancouver Art Gallery and their fall exhibit, WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution. Public access to Hubbub.net during the beta phase will be specific to joining discussions and visiting the site to find out about the many events and organizational activities simultaneous with Vancouver's extraordinary incarnation of WACK! Upon full release in 2009, all users will have access to all areas of the site and anyone with an event or a burning opinion will be able to join in the glorious hullabaloo that is Hubbub.net.
